Brent Dorde
Waipahu High School Student
When student Brent Dorde began his science journey through GLSS at Waipahu High School, he wasn’t just learning about the Scientific Method—he was learning how to use it to make a difference.
The GLSS Training’s hands-on approach taught Brent how to ask smart questions, gather meaningful data, and draw real-world conclusions. Inspired by health challenges in his community, Brent used these new skills to tackle an important issue: diabetes.
Brent knew that diabetes is a serious health problem, especially among Filipino adults in his community. Despite new technology like insulin pumps and glucose monitors, many people still struggle to manage the disease. Brent saw an opportunity: what if these tools could be used not just to react to high blood sugar—but to prevent it?
Brent wondered whether insulin pump data could help people design better meal plans and reduce their risk of dangerous blood sugar swings.
Brent applied the Scientific Method step-by-step, just like he learned in GLSS Training. He recruited four Filipino participants between the ages of 40 and 50, all living with Type I diabetes. Each participant wore an insulin pump that recorded their blood glucose levels in real-time. Every day, they downloaded their data and logged their meals.
Over the course of the project, Brent worked with each participant to test different meal planning strategies. The goal? Keep their blood sugar within healthy ranges and reduce the big ups and downs that can lead to health problems.
The results were powerful. When participants followed structured meal plans—based on their own insulin pump data—their blood sugar levels became much more stable. In fact, Brent found that blood glucose fluctuations dropped by 20% to 45% when sticking to the personalized plans.
This meant fewer dangerous spikes or drops in blood sugar, which is a big step in preventing the long-term effects of diabetes. It also showed how combining modern tech with thoughtful planning could make life better for real people—not just in theory, but in daily routines.
Brent’s project proved just how effective the Scientific Method can be when applied to everyday challenges. Thanks to the clear and engaging instruction from GLSS, Brent turned a complex health issue into a research project with meaningful impact. His work showed that scientific thinking isn’t just for labs or textbooks—it’s a powerful tool for change.
With GLSS’s innovative training and real-world focus, any student can discover how to solve problems, get results faster, and set the stage for a future filled with purpose.
