A Process Improvement Project is an effort to incrementally reduce cost, cycle time, variation or defects within a process. These efforts involve a problem where the root cause and solution are unknown. These efforts can be addressed by DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve & Control) or PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Adjust) improvement methods.
